Another New World Record for the MX-5

In June 2013, no fewer than 683 privately owned MX-5s were brought together in the Dutch city of Lelystad for an audacious mission: staging the world’s largest-ever parade of a single car model. For this cause, MX-5 aficionados drove their cars in from across Europe, including all three generations of this iconic roadster.

On June 15, the huge convoy of MX-5s embarked on the extravagant parade, dubbed MAX-5 2013, departing from the RDW motor vehicle test center. The 15-kilometer parade was successfully concluded, setting a new Guinness world record.
The MX-5 is no stranger to world records. The previous Guinness record in the motorcade category was a parade of 459 MX-5s in the Germany city of Essen in 2010. Moreover, the MX-5, with cumulative sales of more than 900,000 cars since its debut in 1989, has been continuously recognized as the “best selling two-seater sports car” by Guinness World Records.

Amid roaring cheers from enthusiastic Mazda car owners who gathered for the latest event, Jeffrey Guyton, president and CEO of Mazda Motor Europe GmbH, was presented with an official certificate of the new world record. Down the road, MX-5 owners will perhaps rally together again for yet another world record, this time with a convoy including the yet-to-come fourth-generation MX-5s.
